Martin Fry likes Scritti

Just now on Dutch Radio 3 FM, in the Eighties Request Week, ABC’s Martin Fry mentioned Scritti’s Wood Beez as one his favourite eighties records. In his opinion Scritti Politti is an underrated band. There was also mentioning of the new Scritti album. After that they played Wood Beez. Lovely. Scritti is back for sure.

The unknown interviewer from a 2005 interview is Mark Riley (formerly of the Fall and Mark Riley and the Creepers). Riley has two shows on BBC 6 “Mark Riley’s Mint” and “Mark Riley’s Rocket Science” one of which is the origin of this interview. The Fall are the band refered to but unnamed who played a communist party benefit gig with Scritti Politti. As Riley proves here and elsewhere in his shows he is grreat fan of early Scritti

Like Scritti, I really dig Martin Fry. I remember talking to my idol on Saturday Superstore once. I asked when ABC’s new album was out. He didn’t know.
I wish I had Scritti’s new LP…..I bet it’s soooooo cool

Martin Fry had ‘Faithless’ as his single of the week back in 1982 when reviewing the new singles for ‘Smash Hits’. Mind you, Green wasn’t always very polite in return!

Do you see any comparison between Scritti and ABC, in terms of ABC’s elaborate marketing aesthetic?
Green: I think they did it fairly trashily actually… they’re a bit hack.

But at the same time theirs succeeds…
Green: It does work.

Whereas yours…
Green: Well, Jesus Christ, I could have gone into the studio with Trevor Horn and given him five notes and five words… if it weren’t for a stick of Erace Plus and Trevor Horn, I don’t know where old Martin Fry might be! To say his is successfully functioning when mine isn’t is rubbish. I’ve neither been in the position to afford Trevor Horn, nor do I want him. If ABC is evidence of a total usefulness perhaps we’re talking at cross-purposes. I’m trying to make records on my own terms, not Trevor Horn’s or Phonogram’s. I’m not being pious about it. It’s a different thing.

(Nice that Fry obviously doesn’t bear a grudge)!
