I was also at the Oxford gig, but have only just got round to posting. I thought my ship had come in when I got the news Scritti Politti were playing the Zodiac. What an excellent evening, Guinness was also on offer at £2 a pint - 'White Bread Black Beer' - a happy coincidence! I loved it all but my highlight was 'The Sweetest Girl', as I have just thought it was brilliant ever since I first heard it all those years ago on my Rough Trade 7". All the songs from the new album, which is a corker, sounded great live, and 'Am I Right In Thinking' is an absolute cracker. Thanks also for the Zodiac photos.

Woo? amazing pix! nice job.
As Jason says above ^^^ this was an incredible show!
I am also super excited about going to Scala tonite now.
Although seeing as Scala is twice the size of Zodiac
it may be a tad less intimate than Oxford. Still going to be brilliant though!
Hope to see you in there Ellen. If I do, I promise I'll come up and say hi.

Yes the setlist, which I peaked at from the back of the Zodiac, was kind of unexpected! 'Skank Bloc Bologna' was a definite highlight, especially with a twin-guitar assault - my gig companion was new to the joys of SP and was very impressed. Some of the tracks from the LP were much better live - 'After Six' (now a duet with the bass-playing vixen Alyssa) and 'E11th Nuts', which was like an electronic Beefheart and warranted being played twice. 'Dr Abernathy', 'Snow in Sun' & 'Cooking' all stood out too. Green was convincing when rapping on 'Come Clean', 'D to the O' & the b-side of 'The Boom Boom Bap'. The twin guitar skanking on 'The "Sweetest Girl" was fantastic, made the song much more powerful (as well as that line "when the government falls - I wish I could tell") and 'Wood Beez' was an absolute joy. Alyssa plays a bass-synth on that, so it's surprisingly close to the original...

The band really brought the music to life, heck they all feel like characters! Green is a little bit like a lecturer between songs, talking directly to the audience and often not directly through the mic. A great return to the stage after all this time - the new material shines and it's nice to hear some old classics. Like Dylan, I think Scritti-2006 could reinterprete some older tracks wonderfully in their current line-up - the hip-hop inflected tracks in Oxford suggest something from 'Anomie & Bonhomie' could be played (e.g. 'Umm', 'Brushed with Oil...', 'Die Alone' - I've rediscovered A&B in light of the latest LP and find it much more enjoyable than before) and maybe a 'Flesh & Blood' take on 'The Word Girl', or 'Asylums in Jerusalem', or 'Jacques Derrida'...a great set list that didn't rely on nostalgia and a very welcome return. You're in for a treat and hope Green & co enjoy the tour as much as they appeared to tonight!

Dear Lord Allmighty! That setlist is incredible! "Skank Bloc Bologna," with a "Wood Beez" encore????!!! Can anyone testify to what these new renditions sounded like? I can't wait until Green plays America (gulp--touch wood)!

About tomorrow's gig at the Scala, i'll be there around 7pm, when the door opens. On the website i saw there are quite a few bars in there, ample space to have a chat before the gig. Love to meet other fans!

Last time we spoke, Green told: 'I remember the hair'. Referring to my rather long curly hair. I hope I recognize Green, next time we meet :)
