P.S. "atheism" is as much an article of faith as being "born again" if i ever have to sit at some judgement seat, i will argue with Him! ask: well, who the hell are you? and if you cast me to hell, where's your mercy now, bitch?!? P.S.S. love the grocery list/lions after slumber trope. now i will forever sing: my onions, my beer, my toilet paper, my tomAHtoes. thanx a lot bee-yatch!

ok... MY (imho?) first impression was describing a kidnapping that ends up in waco or falling in love with a member of the symbionese (sp? that's "spelling?" not "scritti politti". liberation army. can you say "stockholm syndrome"? myself technically i was "born again" in the baptist faith but it was under duress, i.e. "peer pressure". and as i was taught in christian school, "born again" is a PERMANENT status. (like if hitler accepted Jesus as his "lord and personal saviour" just before he aced himself he'd be in heaven now.) so i AM going to heaven but i will be living at one of the "poorer" addresses 'cause i'm a "back-slider". YAAAY! see ya there! but i am surprised that no caught the OBVIOUS ref to apostle thomas "the doubter". "jesus keep your hands where i can see"? forget which gospel it comes from, (and too lazy to pull down my copy of the KJV bible) but when christ comes back after his three days in the tomb, thomas doesn't believe and has the audacity to ask to put his fingers thru the holes in jesus's palms! EWWW! but proof nonetheless.

This song always cheers me up, and incidentally it's great for jiving to. It seems to deal with the way that we appeal to concepts like mercy, justice etc to achieve our own ends, good or bad, extending perhaps to the way religions provide us with justification for all sorts of behaviour. Have you noticed that in live performances it goes into an extra section: "Jesus is the answer, he can solve any problem", ending either with three words, either "yes he can" or "no he can't" (and on at least one occasion "can he fuck?") depending (if you believe) on whether god or the devil has Green's ear that night. (BTW I'm a confirmed atheist all the time, but usually not brave enough to bang my tambourine about it.)

'After Six' might mean after six pints... frankly, after six pints, I'd be anybody's bridesmaid!

My initial reaction to this song was that it was a fun song. When really listening, i don't think it's about Jesus or mercy or wisdom, it's about the 'me'. Where there is nobody you can trust. The only plead for something to take action is to justice.. to take the sword and cut them down. Seems to me it's a downright refusal to believe, rather 'break every bone' or 'kill them all'.

As for the title, coincidence has it After Six is also a bridesmaid dresses and formal wear brand. This might have nothing to do with it, but it does refer to the time after six o'clock.

Not sure this comment leads anywhere, but it sure is fun. We should do a series!
