Wow! Rhodri, what great news! My year just got a whole lot brighter! SMiLE is the Brian Wilson solo work I'd most recommend, obviously his most recent cohesive work, while also a tie to his past with the Beach Boys. I'm sure that someone else (perhaps the Allmusic Guide) could give you a better background story on the whole Smile sessions and his ensuing breakdown. It's a fascinating story, mostly because in 2004 Wilson was able to finally put some of those demons to rest be recording a fully realized version of the album. The production strikes an incredible balance between contemporary crispness and 60s warmth (it was recorded in the same studio, on the same equipment as Pet Sounds and the original Beach Boys version of Smile), and I think that it adds worlds of clarity to the original murkiness of the Smile sound (at least from what I've heard of the original). It's an intriguing reinterpretation, not least because it doesn't sound like he's reliving it, but imbuing old material with a new energy nonetheless. Not to mention that Van Dyke Parks' lyrics are quite possibly the only antecedent to Green's level of witty wordplay (although with somewhat less realistically grounded verbosity). An example:

"Dove nested towers the hour was
Strike the street quicksilver moon
Carriage across the fog
Two-Step to lamp lights cellar tune
The laughs come hard in Auld Lang Syne"

That line makes me swoon every time I hear it. Hope this suggestion helps.

This is great stuff, unimaginable a year ago or so. But I must honestly admit that Brian Wilson is an absolute blind spot on my musical radar. I know some popular Beach Boys tunes, but that's it. Must start downloading soon...... Any suggestions what his essential works are ?

We don't have a confirmed list of US dates as yet, but it has been hinted that the tour will start around the 28th, and may also take in San Francisco, Pomona, Chicago, Toronto, New York, Washington, Philadelphia... all To Be Confirmed.

Roger, I agree. A&B blew me away too.

I was lucky: I heard the album for the first time in the really cool art-deco Hotel Eden in Lisbon, Portugal. The sun, Lisbon and my current way of working with computers for music instead of spending time in studio's... this record A&B made everything clear to me and changed my life. It all made sense and fit nicely together. Deeply impressed, and deeply connected to Scritti.

An inner mountain flame you can't stop...

I felt right from the start that WBBB was Green's Pet Sounds so it is rather fitting that Scritti play on Brians show.
The contrast between the perfectionism of Wilsons band to Greens merry bunch of chums is very exciting. Scritti have now done extremely well live in a very short time but expecting the vocal harmonies, for example, to gel live is too much. I wonder what the Beach Boy fans will make of them?
Finally a comment about WBBB. As much as I like the record, what I really miss is that 'Um' moment. Listening to A & B the first times really blew me away! It was just sooo different to anything by anybody and never dull. My daughter is of the same opinion, but I note that nearly evreyone who leaves comments here pines for the C & P era. 'Cept Brian Wilson maybe...

If you read it again, John, you'll see it only says that 'Perfect Way' was on 'Cupid and Psyche'. Whilst I certainly wouldn't be complaining if they did incorporate it in the set I find it hard to imagine that song working particularly well live, compared to 'Wood Beez'.

Amazing news about the concert- I love 'Pet Sounds'. I hadn't realised Brian had already done a tour of it five or six years ago. Maybe Green will do some backing harmonies.

I'm guessing 'Hands Up' may not be on the setlist!

What is really great is that the website says they will be featuring "Perfect Way!" This makes sense since it was SP's biggest hit in the US and it is the song they are most known for.
