Unfortunately no Mercury Prize for Scritti Politti. It went to the Arctic Monkeys. Read it here. I guess the nomination in itself was a huge recognition for Green’s work. And now a pint of Guinness to wash this news down !

Well, sadly Scritti didn’t win the final Mercury Prize although they did get an award for being short listed, as do all the artists. They performed Snow In Sun (incorrectly introduced by Jools Holland as Sun In Snow!! Doh!)
After a faultless performance (without his music stand….maybe they had lyrics on autocue?), Green gratefully accepted the award, thanking Geoff Travis and everyone at Rough Trade, his wife Alys & the band. He then finished up by saying that the award will look nice in his attic!
They played a brief clip of what might be a promotional video for Snow In Sun, although it might have been something from an EPK or put together especially for the show.
In some of the other clips between performances, not many people cited Scritti as their choice but there was a fairly even balance.
Ultimately, the final award went (very predictably) to the Arctic Monkeys, reinforcing the tradition that each year the prize alternates between unpopular and popular (last years winners, Anthony & The Johnsons, were hugely unpopular) so it was really no surprise, although even the Arctic Monkeys thought someone else should have won it when they said in their acceptance speech, “Someone call 999, Richard Hawley’s just been robbed !â€
An interesting night, albeit a little disappointing.
With any luck, someone with their PC hooked up to their Sky+ or VCR will be able to upload clips. The BBC also has a very good playback facility although I’m not sure this will be on there yet, and it’s usually only available to UK residents.
Still, at least Green now has recognition from his peers for his craft.
Good news! The Snow in Sun single is now available for download via iTunes (or, as Jools Holland announced it this evening, “Sun in Snow” lol!)
Didn’t bother downloading either of the album tracks, but it is now nice to be able to listen to a version of “Thinking” that doesn’t sound like it was recorded in a goldfish bowl :-)
“When I was happy” is a really sweet track, too. Just wish it was a little longer!
Ha ha the band marched down the steps off the stage like kids finally getting thruogh their assembly reading.

Ha Ernst, I do believe I wittered that very same phrase to Green at Hay. I’m waiting for Micheal Jackson next year, nothing is impossible anymore!
