   I stopped by Virgin SF (there was an ad in the SF Weekly too) and they had neither the CD nor the promo. The product mgr. claimed a “shipping problem” but they haven’t carried the CD since it came out. I bought it online. They’re supposed to follow up by phone when they sort it out. We’ll see.

   Here in NYC, much the same to report as Stephen, sadly – Union Square and Times Square Megastores both lacking in 3-track promo CD thus far (tho plenty of copies of WBBB sitting in the racks, which in fact they’ve had in stock as an import well before its domestic Nonesuch release).

   I checked at Newbury Comics in Boston. The clerk said they sold out of the CD weeks ago. I’m sure he’s mistaken. You know how thick some of them can be. Couldn’t get any info from Virgin in NYC when I stopped in. It appears that this three track CD is quite elusive. Perhaps Green and Rough Trade should sell a couple hundred on e-bay. Just my marketing mind throwing up a fan friendly suggestion since we’re likely to be the ones to buy it.

   My best guess is that it simply doesn’t exist, just like it does’t exist in Europe.

   It exists…I am looking at one right now. We shipped it into the tour markets only in the past few days and will follow up Monday, making use of what you are telling us here regarding specific markets/stores. We’re sorry if this doesn’t completely accomplish what we are setting out to do…it can be hard sometimes to coordinate these efforts with retail. Newbury Comics in Boston has been very supportive from the beginning, for one…We also hope to get this up on iTunes soon so that everyone can hear/own these tracks…I realize it in effect penalizes those of you who loyally bought the record straightaway, but we are trying to give those who haven’t yet taken the plunge (and such a pleasurable one, too!) a reason to go get the record.–David Bither, Nonesuch

   Thanks for chiming in. Glad to hear that someone at the record company is keeping tabs on the fan community. However, having spoken directly to people at Newbury Comics, even though they may have been very supportive of the album, no one there seems to know anything about the three track promo CD. I worked for major labels for several years and we always had a very difficult time trying to get the accounts on board with special/exclusive releases. Many times they didn’t even know they have them on the premises. I will endeavor to find out more information from someone at Newbury Comics. You might be looking at one of the promos right now, but you have the privilege of being at the label. It might help to give the fans an idea of when these items will be made available in their respective markets by distributing that info through this site.

    Perhaps it wil be available when Scritti tours to those areas. The Pet Shop Boys 3-track b-side collection became available at that time. When I get back to nyc, I will investigate as well.

    Here’s the update regarding the 3-track EP:

    Virgin San Francisco – stock and samplers arrived and were set up on Saturday.

    Virgin Chicago – has stock and samplers.

    Virgin Hollywood & Sunset (LA) – Both stores have good stock.

    Virgin Ontario & Anaheim (CA) – Samplers arrived last Thursday, both stores have stock on the cd.

    By the way, the LA Times ran a Scritti Politti article on Saturday that featured a conversation between Green and Elvis Costello:

    Grabbed mine at Virgin LA — though it meant buying the album for the third time. (Import, domestic… domestic again!) Didn’t bother me, though… I got it signed after the Roxy gig! (And touring band member Dave oogled it enviously…)

    Definitely, it should be for sale along with the other merch at the tour… $5 for a three track CD would be a BARGAIN.

    I completely understand the desire to have these at the gigs but for the moment, the promotion with the retailer in each market is based at least in part on its exclusivity to them. As I mentioned earlier, we do hope to have these tracks up on iTunes after the tour, which I know is not exactly the same. If we come up with another bright idea for how to get these to people, we’ll let you know…

    Still no sign of the promo CD at either of the two Virgin Megastores in NYC, as of Hallowe’en night. Lots of blank stares from the sales staff when asked about it, and helpful advice along the lines of ‘the other store’s probably doing this promotion, not us’… but no CD.

    I went back to Virgin SF after receiving a call that the CDs were in but there were no promos to be found. Don’t know how many they had. The staff there seemed to think that they hadn’t arrived yet, helpful as usual. Disappointing, but itunes availability is something at least.

    little epiphanies
    went into (store name changed to protect the innocent) unpicked a 3 song CD, took it up to the desk and got a bad case of ‘Computer says ‘Nah’… no bar code and do i really want a third version of WBBB (partial downlaod, US album and a re-copy)? No.
    The guy (or girl) looked around and said ‘I guess i could give it to you’. And did. Happy. they will go to the gig, too, I believe.
    Just thought you’d like to know.

    Your attention to the Scritti fan community gets a giant gold star! Thanks for keeping us informed. I managed to get one of my friends in Chicago to pick up the CD plus bonus. Yeah…we all have the album about three or four times now. It’s worth it! How many of us have several pressings of the other Scritti albums? Too many of us, I imagine. Anyway, thanks for keeping us up to date. Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to see Green and co. on this tour. I’m in NYC now, but will be writing and working on a couple album projects in LA next week when they are in town. Guess it wasn’t meant to be this time. Maybe they’ll make a return visit? Hope we don’t have to wait another 25 years!

    ‘Three Unreleased Tracks’ CD now in the racks at both NYC Virgin Megastore locations. Purchased my third copy of WBBB in order to get one, but did so quite happily. Thanks and cheers to D Bither and Nonesuch. Roll on 10 Nov (Bowery Ballroom gig)!
